The Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection has issued a public order declaring an early start to the fire season in Alaska’s coastal region, which includes much of Southcentral and Southeast Alaska.

According to a press release from the Alaska Department of Natural Resources, the state forester has determined that weather conditions, including warm temperatures and low snowpack across specific areas of Alaska, raises the risk of wildland fire ahead of the designated fire season, which typically starts April 1.

The order goes into effect Monday, March 17 at midnight.

Areas of heightened wildfire danger include all of Southeast Alaska.

Burn permits are required for these areas at all times during the fire season. The order applies to all state, private and municipal lands within the region.

More information about burn permits is available at dnr.alaska.gov/burn.
