The City and Borough of Juneau Public Works and Facilities Committee will hold a regular meeting on March 17 at 12:10 p.m. During the meeting, the committee will discuss a plan for a weeklong discount for Capital Transit riders that utilize its new Token Transit online fare system.

Capital Transit has announced an April launch of Token Transit, a mobile fare payment application. The application, approved by the Public Works and Facilities Committee in July 2024, will allow our riders to purchase bus fares directly on their smartphones.

According to Capital Transit Superintendent Rich Ross, Token Transit is a mobile application that enables riders to purchase single-ride fares, youth fares, and monthly passes directly from their mobile devices.

Other features will include the ability to activate and display their digital fares for validation upon boarding, and the ability to access fare purchasing options.

The app will be compatible with Apple and Android devices. Riders will be able to download the app from their app stores, either the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store.

To encourage adoption by the committee, and ultimately the CBJ Assembly, and to generate a buzz for the app, Ross suggested in a memo implementing a promotional offer; For the first week following the launch, all fares purchased through the Token Transit app would be offered at a 50 percent discount off the regular fare price.

According to Ross, CBJ staff estimate that there would be a $5,000 loss in fare revenue due to the promotional fare.

Capital Transit plans to promote the offer via website announcements, in-bus signs, and public service announcements.
