The CBJ Assembly Lands Housing and Economic Development Committee will hold a meeting Monday, Feb. 24 at 5 p.m. in the Assembly Chambers ay City Hall to take public testimony on the proposed Huna Totem lease at the former sub port.

Huna Totem Vice President Susan Bell is the lead on the project envisioned for Áak’w Landing in downtown.

The Áak’w Landing site, by many people, is still referred to as the sub port, Bell said. She explained the allure of the location when it comes to adding a final, fifth dock to the waterfront, saying, “It’s got pedestrian access into downtown and easy vehicular access at the Whittier Egan intersection that any tour vehicle can leave easily and not add to the congestion downtown. It’s just a beautiful parcel, for what has been contemplated for many years as a marina or cruise ship terminal or other mixed use.”

Huna Totem picked up the property in 2022 after receiving the land from Norwegian Cruise Lines, which initially bought the property at auction in 2019.

“That relationship is very similar to the way docks were built over in Hoonah at Icy Strait Point,” Bell said.

The city says the public is welcome to testify in person, remotely, or in writing.
