A small fire started in a science classroom at Dzantik’i Heeni Middle School on Tuesday morning at around 11 a.m.

According to a push notification from Juneau School District, the fire started in a science workshop. The sprinkler system activated, and all students and staff were safely evacuated.

Capital City Fire/Rescue responded and knocked down a small fire in the classroom. No injuries were reported by the school district.

In a message to News of the North, CCFR explained the situation, saying, “There was a malfunction of a Bunsen burner that ignited the fire in a science class on the second floor. The building was quickly evacuated and the school did a great job accounting for occupants and providing them a safe location to wait.”

According to CCFR, the sprinkler system contained the fire to the area of origin. Fire crews finished putting the fire out and cleared smoke from the building.

Although there were no staff or student injuries, one firefighter was transported to the hospital after they experienced a medical issue on scene.

School maintenance staff was was reported removing standing water off the flooring, restoring the sprinkler system and working to get the classrooms back in service as soon as possible.
