Juneau Pools is offering two aquatics certification courses this spring, and they’re free for participants who apply for jobs with the City and Borough of Juneau.

Courses for Water Safety Instructor Certification and American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification will be held at the Dimond Park Aquatic Center. Both offer nationally recognized credentials and are open to individuals age 15 and older.

The Water Safety Instructor course runs Monday through Friday, June 2-June 6, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Participants will be trained to teach Red Cross swim lessons and water safety. A pre-course swim test is required and includes several swim strokes, one minute of floating or sculling, and treading water.

Full attendance is required. Registration is open through Tuesday, May 27, with a six-person limit.

The Lifeguard Certification course takes place Tuesday through Friday, May 27-May 30, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. It includes a pre-course swim test featuring a 200-yard swim, a 10-foot brick retrieval, and two minutes of treading water. Successful participants will earn a two-year American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification.

Registration is open through Tuesday, May 20, and limited to 10 participants.

Both courses are free for those who apply for employment with the City and Borough of Juneau by the last day of class. Otherwise, the lifeguard course costs $250 and the instructor course costs $400.
