Juneau, Alaska (KINY) – The 69th annual Juneau Ski Swap is at Centennial Hall this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Mike Satre from Juneau Ski Club and Sean Edwards from Juneau Ski Patrol joined Capital Chat to talk about the event.
They said it serves as a major fundraiser for both organizations.
Satre gave background information on Juneau Ski Club.
“The Juneau Ski Club is one of the oldest ski clubs in the nation. It was formed in 1935. You had the folks when they were done with the mines and done with the summer fishing found a way to clamber up the hills around here. It started skiing and the ski club helped develop more and more opportunities over the years and ultimately led to the development of Eaglecrest as we have it today,” he said. “The Juneau Ski Club over the last 40 years or so, I was a Mighty Mite in the Juneau Ski Club 40 years or so ago, has really turned into facilitating youth skiing opportunities, primarily racing, but we also have a growing free ride program.”
Edwards shared information about the Juneau Ski Patrol.
“When the ski clubs started out, there were no safety services,” he said. “They started doing training and stuff to provide first aid services for people who get injured up on the hill. I don’t know when we separated from the ski club into our own patrol, but we’ve both been going for long, long before Eaglecrest was ever formed.”
The community can learn more about skiing history at the Juneau Douglas City Museum.
Thursday and Friday after 5:00 p.m. will serve as item check-ins for Saturday’s outdoor gear sale. Items can also be dropped off from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Saturday. New and used items are accepted, but any item deemed unsafe will not be accepted.
There is no cost to drop off items. There is a $5.00 admission fee for the Ski Sale on Saturday which is from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
