Two Bowie County schools are tackling chronic absenteeism by removing a surprising barrier: clean clothes. Leary and Hooks Elementary are part of Whirlpool’s Care Counts Laundry Program, which provides washers, dryers, and a year’s supply of detergent.
Librarian Dee Crites explains, “Every child wants to come to school clean.” For some families, lack of access to laundry facilities keeps kids at home.
Developmental Psychologist Richard Rende says the program boosts attendance, with 87% of participating students nationwide gaining 13 extra school days annually.
Both schools hope to extend this impactful program next year.
