A Bowie County man accused of murdering and sexually assaulting his girlfriend in 2017 has been deemed mentally fit to stand trial.

Russell Ryan Soule, 34, is charged with capital murder and aggravated sexual assault in connection with the death of Lindsey Torres on Sept. 15, 2017. A judge set his trial for December after a mental health expert found him competent.

According to police, Soule allegedly confessed to killing Torres while being transported to a hospital in March 2023. He reportedly admitted to strangling her and leaving her body in a bathtub at their Wake Village home. An autopsy determined Torres drowned, with signs of strangulation and possible sexual assault.

Soule faces life without parole if convicted of capital murder. He remains in the Bowie County jail on a $2.75 million bond.
