A 21-year-old man is facing felony assault charges in Bowie County after allegedly trying to attack his father with a machete.
Authorities say Mauricio Cordova had been drinking to celebrate his birthday on February 15. Around 1 a.m. Sunday, he reportedly entered his father’s bedroom and attempted to assault him while holding a machete. Deputies arrived to find the father outside in his underwear in 37-degree weather. Communication was aided by a translation app until a Spanish-speaking officer assisted by phone.
When deputies tried to arrest Cordova, he allegedly resisted, leading officers to use a taser. One deputy suffered an arm injury during the struggle.
Cordova is being held in Bowie County jail on a $120,000 bond. If convicted, he faces five to 99 years or life in prison. The case is assigned to 202nd District Judge John Tidwell.
