Juneau, Alaska (KINY) – A winter weather advisory has been extended until Sunday morning for Juneau. From 9 p.m. Saturday to 9:00 a.m. Sunday 3-5 more inches are expected. 6 inches of snow was recorded as of 3:00 p.m. on Saturday in the Mendenhall Valley back area.

National Weather Service Juneau meteorologist Lance Chambers gave more details on January’s record snowfall for the month. He said it was possible through cold air in place and moisture supply. Just before the first January snowstorm, there were cold and dry northerly outflow events. Just three systems in January added up to 76.8 inches.

“Last month we got 76.8 inches of snowfall and the previous record for the month was set back in ’09 which was 75.2 inches. So, we broke it by 1.6. This January basically was also the second-highest snowfall for any month on record for Juneau,” Chambers said. “So, the only month that ever beat it was February of 1965 which had 86.3 inches of snow for that month. And what’s notable about that, you know, only 28 days in February and that month in 1965, the record for the most snow ever in Juneau.”

He added that while November and December were warm and wet during this El Niño winter, there was a noticeable snow event on Nov. 20. But besides that, January was a complete flip.
