
A Haines Borough Police Department officer was involved in a shooting and foot pursuit on Monday morning.
According to the Alaska Department of Public Safety, on Monday. Feb. 17, at 9:56 a.m., a Haines police officer responded to a disturbance on Beach Road regarding an individual brandishing a knife. The officer made contact with the individual on the Haines Highway near the Post Office.
The individual, later identified as 32-year-old Haines resident Aihan Goldberg, is alleged to have thrown multiple knives at the officer. In response, the officer discharged their duty weapon. A foot pursuit ensued, and Goldberg was subsequently taken into custody. Goldberg was jailed for Assault in the 3rd Degree. According to the department, additional charges are anticipated.
Goldberg was not hit by the gunfire and no law enforcement officers or bystanders were injured during the incident.
At the request of the Haines Borough Police Department, the Alaska Bureau of Investigation has assumed case responsibility and will conduct an investigation into the officer’s use of lethal force.
Once the ABI investigation is completed, it will be independently reviewed by the Alaska Office of Special Prosecutions.
