The Sitka Ranger District is closing the Starrigavan Artesian Well on Oct. 16, 2023, to address the diminished and unreliable flow at the popular drinking water source. Great American Outdoors Act funding is being used to install a pump system to provide consistent flow and reduce water waste.

To allow for installation and necessary modifications, water will be unavailable at the well and throughout the campground for at least one month. The construction area will also be closed to public use for safety. As a public drinking water source, certification by the State of Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation will be required prior to re-opening the well. The water from the well will remain untreated after the improvements.

The project was scheduled for October to minimize impacts to the public while ensuring the work is completed prior to the winter season. A specific re-opening date will be released when available.
