A Texarkana man is facing felony animal cruelty charges after allegedly shooting his neighbor’s dog with a .22 caliber rifle.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed in Bowie County, 58-year-old Kenneth Wayne Walters admitted to shooting “Drake,” a black Labrador retriever, last month. Walters reportedly told investigators he shot the dog because it was “teasing my dog, no reason, really.”

The dog’s owner found Drake wounded in Walters’ yard on February 16 and took him to an emergency animal clinic in Shreveport, Louisiana. Due to severe abdominal injuries, the dog had to be euthanized.

Walters, who claimed he did not intend to kill the dog, is currently free on a $30,000 bond. If convicted, he faces two to ten years in prison or probation. His case is assigned to 102nd District Judge Jeff Addison, and he is represented by the Bowie County Public Defender’s Office.
