Police in Texarkana, Texas, are educating young people about online safety this week. Officer Shawn Vaughn spoke to nearly 500 sixth graders at Texas Middle School about topics like cyberbullying and sextortion—where people are blackmailed with nude images.
Vaughn emphasized the growing risks kids face on social media, apps, and video games. He said it’s important for students to know the dangers and feel safe reporting issues.
Zannielle Talley, a sixth-grade counselor, urged students to tell a responsible adult if they feel uncomfortable online. Police advise kids not to delete messages from online predators, as they can help track the suspect.
This marks the sixth year the Texarkana Police Department has held these internet safety sessions.
