With freezing temperatures and the threat of winter weather, Texarkana’s homeless shelters are stepping up to provide a warm place for those in need.

The Salvation Army of Texarkana and Randy Sam’s Outreach Center are working together to ensure no one is left out in the cold. Both organizations are opening their doors to anyone seeking shelter during extreme weather, regardless of their circumstances.

“There’s no reason why anyone who wants shelter during the extreme cold cannot come stay at Randy Sam’s,” says Executive Director Jennifer Lacefield.

The Salvation Army has expanded its capacity, operating a mass shelter in addition to its regular housing programs. “We don’t want to compromise one program over the other,” explains Captain Juan Gomez, emphasizing their commitment to comfort and care.

Both shelters are not only offering overnight stays but also providing daytime warming centers. Additionally, Randy Sam’s is distributing cold-weather clothing and hygiene items to those in need, even if they aren’t staying at the shelter.

As demand rises, both organizations are calling on the community for help. The Salvation Army needs volunteers, while Randy Sam’s is in urgent need of winter clothing donations.

“The community’s support makes our work possible,” says Captain Gomez. “During times like this, we lean on that support more than ever.”

Currently, Randy Sam’s is housing about 95 people and expects up to 25 more in the coming days. The Salvation Army’s mass shelter has already welcomed 14 individuals, with room for additional guests.
