Texas will no longer require annual safety inspections for non-commercial vehicles. However, drivers must still register their vehicles and pay a $7.50 inspection replacement fee.

Texarkana Police Information Officer Shawn Vaughn says the change simplifies the process but doesn’t exempt drivers from keeping vehicles roadworthy. Police can still issue citations for defective equipment like broken headlights.

Newly registered vehicles will pay a $16.75 fee for the first two years. Emissions testing will still be required in Texas’ most populated counties.
