Juneau, Alaska (KINY) – The electricians are making progress and sections of the harbor have power as of Wednesday evening. Repairs are still ongoing.
Harbormaster Matt Creswell said the power first went out in Douglas harbor on Monday afternoon during Juneau’s blizzard in the heart of the storm.
“We responded on Monday evening. The main power feed to the harbor was tripped off. It wouldn’t reset. It was unsafe at that point to try to get electricians down on the dock working on things,” he said.
On Tuesday morning, Juneau Harbors mobilized their electrical term contractors. They sent two electricians to Douglas harbor.
“They spent all day yesterday troubleshooting, trying to replicate the problem to figure out where the issue was with minimal success,” Creswell said.”They worked probably until about 5 yesterday evening. They started back again this morning at first light. They’re still having trouble replicating the issues.”
On Wednesday, electrical engineers went to the site to look at the system as a whole.
“We’ve got to find the problem before we can find the solution,” Creswell said. “So, right now, it’s very frustrating because we cannot get the problem to replicate itself the same way any two times. So, we’re trying very hard to figure out what’s going on. We have many, many people working on the problem. It’s our top priority right now. We know tomorrow is Thanksgiving, it’s a holiday weekend. We understand the gravity of the situation and it’s our number one priority to get power back on in Douglas harbor.”
