Alaska State Troopers have recovered the body of a missing Haines man after he failed to return from a skating trip to Chilkoot Lake.

According to the Alaska Department of Public Safety, on Friday, Feb. 14, a dive team was sent to Haines by Troopers, who found and recovered 79-year-old Thomas McGuire from Chilkoot Lake around 10:30 a.m.

McGuire’s next of kin has been notified.

On Feb. 6, Troopers received a report that McGuire, a Haines resident, had not returned home after ice skating at the lake. McGuire was skating alone and his vehicle was located in a parking lot near the lake.

Responders from the Haines Volunteer Fire Department and Alaska State Parks attempted to search the lake, but the search was suspended at the time due to unstable ice.
