The Trump administration on Friday reversed 19 executive orders and presidential directives put into place under former President Joe Biden.

Among the orders reversed was Executive Order 14112, signed by Biden on December 6, 2023, with the title of “Reforming Federal Funding and Support for Tribal Nations to Better Embrace Our Trust Responsibilities and Promote the Next Era of Tribal Self-Determination.”

According to a March 14 signing statement from Trump, the “rescissions are necessary to end radical ideology, eliminate wasteful regulations, and prioritize the interests of American citizens.”

Locally, Tlingit & Haida President Richard Peterson responded, saying, “As Indigenous people, our sovereignty and self-determination is not given—it is inherent. Long before the United States existed, our ancestors governed, cared for our lands, and upheld our responsibilities to our people. The federal government has a trust responsibility to Tribal Nations, and that does not change with Administrations. Tlingit & Haida will continue to stand strong in our sovereignty, guided by the values of our ancestors, and we remain committed to working in good faith to uphold our shared responsibilities.”

The Biden order instructed federal agencies to identify opportunities for “Federal policy reforms that would promote accessible, equitable, and flexible administration of Federal funding and support programs for Tribal Nations.”

Additionally, the Biden order directed the federal government to identify deficiencies in funding and support and make recommendations for new funding and programming “necessary to better live up to the Federal Government’s trust responsibilities and help address the needs of all Tribal Nations.”
