JUNEAU — The University of Alaska Southeast will honor Juneau resident Sioux Douglas with a UAS Meritorious Service Award at the 2025 Juneau campus commencement ceremony.
The event will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 4 in the UAS Recreation Center.
According to a press release from the university, Douglas has advocated for the needs of seniors and people with disabilities in Southeast Alaska. She was part of the founding of Riverview Senior Living and the Teal Street Center, an organization that provides resources for those in need of social services such as elders, at-risk youth, people with disabilities, and low-income families in Juneau.
Additionally, Douglas served as the mayor of Skagway, was a business owner, and contributed to Alaska state policy through her work for the state legislature and for the Alaska Department of Administration.
“She has been recognized as Philanthropist of the Year by the Juneau Community Foundation and received the Women of Distinction Award from AWARE (a non-profit dedicated to providing safety and support for domestic violence survivors). Her commitment to serving others extends to the Juneau Community Foundation,” the press release states. “As one of its first Board members, she helped the Foundation grow its assets from $500,000 to $50,000,000. UAS is honored to recognize Ms. Douglas for her many contributions to Southeast Alaska.”
According to the university, UAS Meritorious Service Awards recognize community members who have demonstrated significant public, academic, volunteer, philanthropic, cultural or artistic service to the local university or one of its community campuses, or to an Alaskan community.
Additionally, over the weekend of May 2-4, the University of Alaska Southeast will celebrate student achievement and success at commencement activities on its three campuses in Sitka, Ketchikan, and Juneau.
