Late last month, a guest at Arkansas’ Crater of Diamonds State Park discovered a 2.30-carat white diamond, the second-largest diamond registered in 2024 and the third over two carats this year. The visitor initially tried wet sifting but later switched to surface searching, a method that involves looking for diamonds on the ground.

Assistant Park Superintendent Waymon Cox explained that the park plows the search area regularly, allowing rain to wash away soil and reveal diamonds. On September 27, conditions were ideal—sunny weather, recent rain, and freshly plowed soil. The visitor spotted a shiny object near the North Wash pavilion, initially mistaking it for trash or an insect.

Upon inspection, park staff confirmed it was a diamond. Park Interpreter Sarah Reap described the stone as silvery-white with a round, pitted surface. It appears brown due to inclusions, tiny imperfections that affect its clarity.

So far, park visitors have found 548 diamonds in 2024, with an average of one to two discoveries daily.
