Juneau, Alaska (KINY) – Juneau is getting hit with another winter storm today not that long after its previous storm last week. Nathan Compton with the National Weather Service Juneau spoke with News of The North about what led to this storm, which has now had it’s warning extended to 9 AM tomorrow.

“Basically what’s happening is we got this stationary front sitting straight over us that’s just constantly dumping down snow,” Compton said. “And the reason why we extended it is because we’re looking at keeping that cold air around a little bit longer keeping it a snow and starting to get a lot more accumulations. Now we are probably going to see different pieces of freezing rain as the cold air kind of recedes and comes back a little bit. So you may get that crust of snow possibly later in the day today but then it’s going to transition back to snow and just accumulate through the night.”

Concerning snow accumulation, there have been reports of nine and 13 inches of snow around the Juneau area with an additional 10 to 16 inches expected.

Compton also cautioned that this storm is not like the one Juneau had last week.

“This snow is somewhat unlike the previous winter storm we’ve had, it’s going to be transitioning into really wet and heavy stuff. So be mindful of snow currently on the ground and accumulating snow on top of that it’s going to weight things down pretty significantly. So be wary of roofs. Be wary of any boats you might have and check in on the elderly.”

The winter storm warning is currently set to expire at 9 AM tomorrow.
